Reducing Body Fat: The Dos and Don’ts

What you should look for if you want to reduce Body Fat.

Our body fat is a big part of how we look. How often have we admired people with sculpted, slender bodies? Well, building muscle isn’t the only aspect of achieving that look. It’s also dependant on reducing the amount of fat covering that muscle. Even those of us who aren’t looking for physical perfection can still benefit from following some simple dos and don’ts of reducing body fat.

Do exercise regularly. Much of the benefit from exercise is lost just days after undertaking it. Work out regularly, and increase your activity generally, to maintain the benefits.

Don’t overdo it. In particular, don’t try to keep up with people far fitter than you. It’s a sure way to become injured, exhausted, and disillusioned. Instead, build up your level of exercise gradually.

Do be more active from day to day. Try walking where you might have used a car. Try taking a walk rather than watching TV. Try gardening, or take up an active hobby. Burning body fat is about increasing activity, not just hitting the gym.

Don’t be afraid of the gym though. It can be easy to be intimidated by images of hyper-fit people pumping iron. But most of the people there aren’t like that, or weren’t when they started. Building muscle can help you to raise your metabolism, which in turn will help burn body fat faster, so it might be worth signing up for a weights session. Just take it gradually.

Do eat more sensibly. Substituting a piece of fruit for one of the biscuits you snack on can make a big difference. So can substituting skimmed for full fat milk, sweetener for sugar, and reducing the amount of fat you use in cooking. Taking the time to cook meals yourself can be helpful in reducing body fat, because ready made meals often have high levels of fat, sugar and salt. If you don’t have time, at least make sure you read the labels carefully.

Don’t crash diet or miss meals. Both of these options amount to variations on the theme of starving yourself, and neither is entirely without dangers, because they mean you aren’t eating a nutritionally balanced diet. Worse, the main thing they do is leave you hungry, which can leave you snacking or binging later on. Instead, focus on slow improvements, based on a diet that you can maintain long term. It’s a far better approach to reducing body fat.
