You are probably here because you want to know the answer to a very popular question, how many calories should I eat a day?
Its an important question, however the answer is different for each person and depends on your:
- Age
- Sex
- Current Weight
- Goals (do you want to lose weight, maintain, lose weight fast etc)
- Metabolism (does your body burn foods quickly or do you have sluggish metabolism?)
- Levels of exercise and physical activity
Below is a calorie calculator and some suggestions to help you to achieve your target weight quickly.
How Many Calories Should I Eat a Day to Lose Weight – Problems With the Answer…
Its generally accepted that in order to lose weight you need to burn more calories than you eat – its sounds obvious and we wouldn’t want to argue with science. But if this is all you need to do why do so many people who are following low calorie diets still struggle to lose weight?
The problem for many people is that they consume too few calories, eat them at the wrong times of the day and don’t provide the body with the nutrients it needs to be in a state of natural balance.
When the body is in balance metabolism levels will be high and it will be able to burn fat quickly. When the body is deprived of calories and therefore essential nutrients it goes in to shut down mode and slows down the speed at which it burns calories.
The body also stores fat if you drop your calorie intake too low, rather than releasing it as it fears it may need this fat at a later date to sustain the body if this calorie depletion continues. Low calorie intake can also cause muscle wastage.
The result = little or no weight loss and over the long term it can affect overall health.
We are sorry if you came here to simply understand how many calories should I eat a day to lose weight, but we know from experience that knowing the answer to this question doesn’t always help you achieve the results you desire.
However we can tell you how to lose weight quickly and keep it off without depriving your body and still being able to eat some of the foods you enjoy.
Remember: Burn Fat – Don’t Starve Your Body
The solution:
- Are toxins the issue? see below…
- Instead of three main meals, spread calorie intake over 5 smaller meals
- Make sure you eat a decent breakfast which includes lean protein (a good quality meal replacement shake is a good option)
- Drink plenty of water throughout the day to flush out toxins and make you feel full for longer
- Eat natural foods that are close to nature – nothing that has been processed, refined or alerted. Avoid products with preservatives, additives, colours and flavourings
- Exercise daily to encourage your metabolism to kick-in and start burning fat
- Don’t starve yourself – you’ll slow down the speed at which you burn fat and will deplete your body
Back to calorie counting…
Hopefully this explanation has helped you to understand why its not enough just to have the answer to the question ‘how many calories should I eat a day to lose weight’.
Even though we don’t believe that calorie counting is the answer, we still think its important to know roughly how many calories I should eat a day in order to either lose weight fast or maintain results.
To help give you an idea we’ve added a Calorie Calculator to our site but please note this tool can only provide an estimate based on the information you input and does not take in to account how fast or slow your metabolism is.
Alternatively you can calculate your daily calorie intake using the following methods:
Step 1: Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR)
Your Basal Metabolic Rate is the the number of calories needed per day to do nothing.
North American BMR Formula
- Women: BMR = 655 + (4.35 x weight in pounds) + (4.7 x height in inches) – (4.7 x age in years)
- Men: BMR = 66 + (6.23 x weight in pounds) + (12.7 x height in inches) – (6.8 x age in years)
UK/EU BMR Formula
- Women: BMR = 655 + (9.6 x weight in kilos) + (1.8 x height in cm) – (4.7 x age in years)
- Men: BMR = 66 + (13.7 x weight in kilos) + (5 x height in cm) – (6.8 x age in years)
Step 2: Active Metabolic Rate (AMR)
Once you have calculated your BMR its time to calculate your Active Metabolic Rate (AMR). AMR estimates the number of calories you need to maintain your weight based on your level of physical activity:
- Sedentary (little or no exercise) – your AMR = BMR x 1.2
- Lightly active (light exercise/work 1-3 days per week) – your AMR = BMR x 1.375
- Moderately active (moderate exercise/work 3-5 days per week) – your AMR = BMR x 1.55
- Very active (hard exercise/work 6-7 days a week) – your AMR = BMR x 1.725
- Extra active (very hard exercise/work 6-7 days a week) – your AMR = BMR x 1.9
Beating a Weight Loss Plateau
Many people start a diet and lose a decent amount of weight in the first few weeks and then hit a plateau which they struggle to get past. This is because the body has got used to your daily routine and has adjusted your metabolic rate to suit your new diet. In order to get past this plateau you need to ‘shock your body’. You can do this by eating the occasional high calorie meal or increase the amount of exercise you are doing to encourage the body to start burning fat again.
We’ve recently published a detailed article about weight loss plateau’s click here to read it.
3500 calories = 1lb of Fat
According to scientists consuming 3500 calories equals approximately 1lb of fat, however as you can see from the information above and our comments about how many calories should I eat a day you can see why this equation is not really relevant when it comes to trying to lose weight.
Science tells us that 1 pound of fat is equal to 3500 calories, so a daily calorie deficit of 500 should result in 1 pound per week fat loss. In reality things don’t quite work that efficiently!

i really appreciate your site. i just happened to find it. i especially love your points plus calculator. you have some seriously good information on this site. i am a lifetime weight watchers member since 1980′s. i love their new plan.
i do have a question for you.
my friend joined medifast and is going on her 7th week. she is having some problems with the soy and sorbitol that the majority of foods have in them. i know she is eating very little but i’m encouraging her to wean herself off of this starvation diet and start incorporating, slowly, more calories to get her body back to a regular intake and join a program where she doesn’t have this problem. she has i.b.s.
any suggestions or comments would be appreciated. thank you for your interests and concerns in health! take care.

I just wanted to mention that when reading some of the comments, I noticed most people are using the word DIET! Diets dont work!! Stop Dieting and start changing your lifestyle, because as soon as you go off the diet your most likely going to gain the weight back. However if you change your LIFESTYLE and start trying to eat healthy and excersize your going to notice a difference that will last instead of constantly fluctuating.
Just a thought…

Hey Melissa,
I completely agree with what you are saying and making long-term changes to your diet and lifestyle is the keep to getting weight off and importantly keeping it off.
However some people need a kick-start and the good quality weight loss programs provide that AND help people get in to a maintenance program, which some people find easier when supported through coaching and/or meal replacements for example. The research shows that people are much more likely to be successful in losing weight when they follow a program.
We’ve also found that eating a ‘clean’ diet is important and regularly cleansing out the toxins and impurities from the body. Its no good just eating low calorie foods, they need to be toxin free, nutritionally dense foods for the body to be able to work as it was designed to.

Hi Helen,
It looks like your BMI is about 29.1, which is right at the end of the overweight section, so you do need to get your weight under control.
As you can see on our website we recommend a cleansing program which is helping many people to lose weight even if they have struggled before.
I would suggest first taking a look at your diet and lifestyle, make sure your are honest with yourself, and see where you can make improvements to reduce poor quality foods and increase your level of exercise. Eric, you might find out weight loss plateau article useful, there is a link to it in a reply above. It maybe that reducing calories isnt the answer and you need to boost your metabolism and possibly get rid of toxins and impurities that maybe affecting weight loss efforts. As mentioned on this page you won’t lose weight when you ‘starve’ yourself of calories – because your body simply works more slowly and burns less fat. You need to find the right balance and provide your body with the nutrition it needs to operate at its peak.
So rather than counting calories, count high quality calories. Good quality lean proteins, fresh fruit and vegetables etc. And consider using a quality meal replacement shake to provide the correct balance of calories and essential nutrients.
Good luck and let us know how you get on (congratulations on your engagement!)

I found that for me (at the beginning a 5′ 10″ 300lb male 19 years old)(end= 5′ 10″ 215lb male 20years old) that dramatically cutting my meals on the weekends (just to mention…this was not optional i had no $$ for the food, and cafeteria @ college was only open monday-friday) i was able to take in about 500 calories per day on the weekends, and ate only till i was full on weekdays, and i ended up loosing those 85lbs in 6 months….be warned though if you try this way do not make the same mistake i did….which is move in with someone who cooks really well and tries to push seconds and even thirds on you…(back around 285lbs now T.T). first time i tried it wasn’t by choice, but now i’m tired of being this way after feeling how good it feels to be able to do what you want to do without being bent over gasping for air…after a few flights of stairs. so i’m gonna start fasting on my weekends, not as drastically i think, but enough so that i do keep my stomach from filling all the way, hopefully this will help with the (before and now again) black hole…i should point out after adding it up for a week takes me about 3300calories to maintain my current weight…here’s for hoping that gets down to 2000!
