There are several ways to lose those unsightly love handles.
First, you need to know that the same principles apply here as for any other part of your body. The love handles are made up of fat. What you want is to tone and firm those muscles with exercises for love handles and burn the fat at the same time. You can support the fat burning in addition with dieting and/or calories burning exercises.
You see, when you eat less you will lose the weight and fat, and with it you will also lose the love handles. Simple as that.
Some specific exercises for love handles are side bends, sit-ups, crunches and torso twists.
Those are good for toning and shaping because they are targeting the specific area of your body where you want to lose the fat.
While you are performing those side-bends or crunches or whatever supporting exercise, you also need to burn off the fat in the love handles. You do this by burning more calories than what you consume. Common methods of calories burning are using a treadmill,aerobics,biking, swimming or even walking.
Consistency is Key
The most important thing is that you do this fat burning consistently every day. Better even if you do FEWER MINUTES every single day as opposed to going on a exercise craze and do a LOT one day but nothing on the other. Rather 30 mins per day, 6 days a week instead of 2 hours a day and getting too exhausted.
Don't bother with things like a fitness club where you go once or twice a week only. You can take a walk every day, 20 minutes or 30 minutes. Do this every day and you will burn more fat than going to the gym once or twice a week.

Weighted crunches are targeting the abdominal muscles so they are very beneficial, the other is doing bends with dumbbells:
Stand upright, hold one dumbbell at your side and bend your torso downwards until the dumbbell reaches the floor. Do this slowly. Then use your abdominal muscles to support and straighten the force of the weight.
The most important thing you need to know is that in addition to those targeted exercises for love handles you must support the overall burning of body fat with calories burning exercises as mentioned above (aerobics, walking etc..). If you can, also look at your diet and calorie intake. Love handles are made of fat and the only way to get rid of it is to burn it off. The supporting exercises are then strengthening and toning the muscles. But you need to do both things!
