Belly fat is a problem for a lot of people, and many of us wish that we could reduce the amount weighing us down. While it might be nice to be able to blame things on our alcohol consumption, the so called beer belly is down to other sources too. Reducing your alcohol intake will certainly help, but it must be combined with both a sensible diet and greater activity if you want to get rid of the bulge.

Crunches Won’t Cure It

Belly fat will not be eliminated purely by doing abdominal exercises such as crunches or sit ups, no matter how many of them you do. These exercises are great as part of a routine for building core strength and abdominal muscle, but you also need to do something about the layer of fat covering that muscle up.

Eat Less

Instead, reducing belly fat is largely down to the same things as reducing fat elsewhere in the body. You need to reduce the amount of calories you take in by eating less or eating more healthily, and you need to be more active. On the healthy eating front, avoid crash diets. They don’t work, and can see you eating more afterwards to make up for it. Instead, make simple changes such as reducing portion sizes, eliminating sugar from tea or coffee and snacking on fresh fruit instead of biscuits.

Exercise More

Combined with that, improve the amount and type of exercise you take. You could try joining a gym, and using weights to increase muscle mass will certainly help to produce a higher, fat burning metabolism. For a simpler approach, try finding ways in which you could incorporate just a little more walking into your daily routine, look for a sporting activity that seems fun, or set aside twenty minutes for a simple exercise routine. Try finding a friend to work with you, because they’ll drive you to keep going where you otherwise might give up. With just a little work, you’ll soon have reduced your belly fat dramatically.
